Why it happens (Nidana)
Disc strain from lifting and jerky movement, long sitting especially on two-wheelers and bad chairs, cold exposure to the back, constipation aggravating Vata, age-related disc dryness.
Joints & Bones
Gridhrasi — named for the vulture-like gait it causes — is the classical picture of sciatica: pain shooting from the low back or hip down the back of the leg along the sciatic path. A Vata disorder of the nerve, it responds to sustained oil-heat therapy, castor oil internally, nerve-nourishing herbs and disciplined posture care; true disc emergencies need a doctor.
Disc strain from lifting and jerky movement, long sitting especially on two-wheelers and bad chairs, cold exposure to the back, constipation aggravating Vata, age-related disc dryness.
Pain radiating from buttock down the back of thigh and calf, sometimes to the foot; tingling or numbness along the path; worse sitting long, bending forward, coughing; a limp to avoid loading the leg.
Nirgundi — the specific of Gridhrasi, Eranda (castor) — the classical vehicle, Rasna, Bala, Ashwagandha, Guggulu formulations (Trayodashanga, Yogaraja); Nirgundi and Mahanarayana Taila externally.
Classical medicines beyond kitchen herbs should be taken under a registered Ayurvedic practitioner, especially with existing medication, in pregnancy, or for children.
A teaspoon of castor oil in warm milk or dry-ginger tea at bedtime, 3 nights a week — the classical inner lubrication of Gridhrasi; warm Nirgundi/Mahanarayana oil massage along the pain path then hot fomentation daily; never sit longer than 30-40 minutes; sleep with a pillow under the knees (on back) or between knees (on side); Kati Basti and Basti therapy at a Panchakarma centre are the definitive classical treatments for stubborn cases.
Warm, unctuous Vata diet: ghee, sesame, milk with dry ginger at night, moong khichdi, soaked nuts and dates; keep bowels soft — straining flares the nerve.
Cold-dry-stale food, excess beans and raw food, cold-water bathing during pain, fasting, heavy lifting diets without recovery nutrition.
Lift by bending knees, never the waist; firm mattress; lumbar roll while driving; gentle walking is medicine — bed rest beyond 2 days worsens outcomes; lose abdominal weight, it drags the spine.
After the acute phase: gentle Bhujangasana, Ardha Shalabhasana, supine nerve-glide stretches, Pawanmuktasana; strictly avoid seated forward bends and standing toe-touches during pain.
