Why it happens (Nidana)
Ageing (Vata stage of life), overuse or old injury, obesity loading the knees, dry cold food and weather, excessive fasting, sedentary habit weakening support muscles.
Joints & Bones
Sandhivata (degenerative joint pain, akin to osteoarthritis) is classic Vata accumulation in the joints — dryness, cracking and pain that worsens with cold and overuse. Ayurveda counters it with warm oil massage (Abhyanga), fomentation, Shallaki and Guggulu preparations, and gentle strengthening movement.
Ageing (Vata stage of life), overuse or old injury, obesity loading the knees, dry cold food and weather, excessive fasting, sedentary habit weakening support muscles.
Pain that worsens with movement and cold, cracking sounds (crepitus), morning stiffness under 30 minutes, swelling without much heat, difficulty squatting or climbing stairs.
Shallaki (Boswellia), Guggulu (as Yogaraja/Trayodashang Guggulu — practitioner-guided), Ashwagandha, Nirgundi, Rasna, Eranda (castor); Mahanarayana Taila externally.
Classical medicines beyond kitchen herbs should be taken under a registered Ayurvedic practitioner, especially with existing medication, in pregnancy, or for children.
Warm Mahanarayana or sesame oil massage on joints followed by hot fomentation daily; 1 tsp fenugreek seeds soaked overnight, chewed in morning; turmeric-milk at night; keep joints warm; weight reduction if overweight; physiotherapy-style gentle strengthening.
Warm nourishing food, ghee, milk, sesame, fenugreek, garlic, moringa (drumstick), nuts in moderation, adequate protein.
Cold and dry foods, excess bitter/astringent diets, cold drinks, irregular fasting, chana/rajma excess if they cause gas (Vata).
Do not sit cross-legged or squat for long if knees hurt; warm water bathing; avoid cold floors; regular short walks over occasional strain.
Gentle knee-strengthening (straight-leg raises), Tadasana, Setu Bandhasana, Vata-pacifying slow yoga; avoid deep squats and high-impact exercise in flare.
