Immunity & Vitality

Low Immunity & Frequent Illness · Ojakshaya / Vyadhikshamatva

vata involvedkapha involved Source: Charaka Samhita on Rasayana (Chikitsasthana 1); Sushruta on Ojas (Sutra 15)

Ayurveda calls disease-resistance Vyadhikshamatva, powered by Ojas — the refined essence of good digestion. Immunity is built, not boosted: strong Agni, Rasayana herbs (Chyawanprash, Amalaki, Guduchi, Ashwagandha), sound sleep and moderate exercise, sustained over seasons.

See a doctor first if: Recurrent serious infections, persistent fever, unexplained weight loss or night sweats need medical investigation, not just tonics.

Why it happens (Nidana)

Poor digestion producing Ama, chronic stress and sleep debt, crash diets, excessive antibiotics without gut care, sedentary living, seasonal transitions (Ritu Sandhi).

How it shows up (Lakshana)

Frequent colds and infections, slow recovery, low energy, poor wound healing, dull skin and eyes, low enthusiasm (classical sign of low Ojas).

Key herbs & formulations

Chyawanprash (Amalaki-based Rasayana), Guduchi (Giloy), Ashwagandha, Amalaki, Tulsi, Haridra, Pippali Rasayana under guidance.

Classical medicines beyond kitchen herbs should be taken under a registered Ayurvedic practitioner, especially with existing medication, in pregnancy, or for children.

Home care protocol (Chikitsa)

1 tsp Chyawanprash in the morning (diabetics: sugar-free variants, with medical advice); Guduchi decoction or tablets in seasonal transitions; golden milk (turmeric) at night; fix sleep first — 7-8 hours is the cheapest Rasayana; morning sunlight 15 minutes.

Food rules (Pathya–Apathya)

Favour

Freshly cooked warm meals, seasonal fruit, amla daily in any form, ghee in moderation, nuts and seeds, khichdi when digestion is weak.

Avoid

Leftover and stale food, cold drinks, excess sugar (suppresses immunity), irregular meals, heavy food when appetite is low.

Lifestyle (Vihara)

Consistent sleep-wake cycle, moderate daily exercise (excess exercise lowers immunity), stress management, hygiene basics, avoid smoking.

Yoga & breath

Surya Namaskar, Bhastrika (moderate), Anulom Vilom daily; Yoga Nidra for the stress-immunity link.
