High Cholesterol · Medoroga

kapha involved Source: Charaka Samhita Sutra 21 (Ashtauninditiya — Medoroga); Madhava Nidana 34

Raised cholesterol maps to Medoroga — excess and poor-quality fat tissue (Meda) from Kapha-aggravating food and sedentary living. Ayurveda scrapes excess fat with Lekhana herbs (Guggulu, garlic, Triphala) while rebuilding fat metabolism through movement and meal discipline; it complements, never replaces, prescribed statins where a doctor deems them necessary.

See a doctor first if: Cholesterol itself is silent — chest pain, breathlessness on exertion, or calf pain on walking are vascular warnings needing a doctor now. Family history of early heart attacks warrants medical lipid management alongside all lifestyle work.

Why it happens (Nidana)

Fried and processed food, excess dairy and sweets, sedentary routine, day sleep after meals, irregular eating, genetic predisposition, chronic stress eating.

How it shows up (Lakshana)

Usually silent — found on testing; Ayurvedic signs of Meda excess: easy fatigue, heaviness, sweating with exertion intolerance, soft abdominal weight gain, snoring.

Key herbs & formulations

Guggulu (Triphala Guggulu, Medohar Guggulu classically), Lashuna (garlic), Arjuna for heart support, Cinnamon, Triphala nightly, Haridra; honey-water mornings traditionally.

Classical medicines beyond kitchen herbs should be taken under a registered Ayurvedic practitioner, especially with existing medication, in pregnancy, or for children.

Home care protocol (Chikitsa)

One-two crushed raw garlic cloves each morning; Triphala (1 tsp) with warm water nightly; Arjuna bark Ksheerapaka thrice weekly for heart support; 45 minutes brisk walking daily is itself Lekhana (scraping) therapy; guggulu formulations from a practitioner for 3-month courses with lipid retesting.

Food rules (Pathya–Apathya)

Favour

Barley, old rice, moong, plenty of vegetables, garlic-ginger-turmeric in cooking, mustard oil in moderation, seasonal fruit over juice, early light dinner.

Avoid

Deep-fried anything, bakery and trans fats, excess ghee-butter-cream, red meat excess, sugar and maida, alcohol, curd at night, second helpings after satiety.

Lifestyle (Vihara)

Walk after every meal even 10 minutes; no day sleep (raises Kapha); weight loss of even 5 kg shifts lipids; retest lipids every 3-6 months to see what works; never stop prescribed statins without your doctor.

Yoga & breath

Surya Namaskara building to 12 rounds, brisk walking or cycling 45 minutes, Kapalabhati regularly, twists like Ardha Matsyendrasana.
