Urinary Burning & UTI Support · Mutrakrichra

pitta involved Source: Sushruta Samhita Uttara 58-59; Madhava Nidana 30 (Mutrakrichra)

Mutrakrichra means painful, difficult urination — most often the Pittaja type: burning, urgency and frequency matching mild urinary tract irritation. Ayurveda cools the urinary passage with coriander, gokshura and coconut water while flushing generously; confirmed infections need antibiotics, with Ayurvedic care preventing the next episode.

See a doctor first if: Fever with chills, flank or back pain (kidney involvement), blood in urine, symptoms in pregnancy, in men, or in children, or burning persisting beyond 2 days — see a doctor; a urine test and antibiotics may be needed. Herbs here are support and prevention, not a substitute.

Why it happens (Nidana)

Low water intake, holding urine habitually, excess spicy-sour-salty food, alcohol, dehydration in heat, sexual activity related irritation, poor hygiene; recurrent cases often ride on constipation and low immunity.

How it shows up (Lakshana)

Burning while passing urine, frequency with small volumes, urgency, heaviness in the lower abdomen, dark or cloudy urine; Pittaja type shows yellow-red urine with strong burning.

Key herbs & formulations

Gokshura — the premier urinary herb, Punarnava, Coriander (Dhanyaka), Ushira, Chandana (sandalwood), Varuna classically; Chandanasava and Gokshuradi Guggulu (practitioner guided).

Classical medicines beyond kitchen herbs should be taken under a registered Ayurvedic practitioner, especially with existing medication, in pregnancy, or for children.

Home care protocol (Chikitsa)

Coriander-seed water (1 tsp soaked overnight, drink morning) 2-3 times daily; tender coconut water twice daily; a glass of water every waking hour; barley water (Yava) is the classical urinary flusher; do not hold urine; during burning, avoid all spicy food completely.

Food rules (Pathya–Apathya)

Favour

Water 2.5-3 L, tender coconut water, barley water, buttermilk, cucumber, bottle gourd, sweet fruits, moong; cooling and liquid-heavy pattern.

Avoid

Chilli and spices, pickles, alcohol, coffee excess, dry and salty snacks, holding urine, dehydrating workouts in heat.

Lifestyle (Vihara)

Urinate when the urge comes and after intimacy; front-to-back hygiene; cotton innerwear; treat constipation — a loaded bowel irritates the bladder; keep a water bottle always in sight.

Yoga & breath

Baddha Konasana, Malasana, gentle twists; Sheetali pranayama during burning phases.
