Stress & Anxiety · Chittodvega

vata involved Source: Charaka Samhita on Sattvavajaya (mind therapy); Ashtanga Hridaya Su. 1

Ayurveda sees anxiety (Chittodvega) as Vata disturbing the mind and nervous system — racing thoughts, restlessness, poor sleep. The remedy is grounding: Ashwagandha and Brahmi, warm regular meals, oil massage, breath practices, and a firmly regular daily routine (Dinacharya).

See a doctor first if: Panic attacks, chest pain, thoughts of self-harm, or anxiety that prevents daily functioning deserve professional mental-health care alongside any home practice — please reach out to a doctor or counsellor.

Why it happens (Nidana)

Overwork and irregular routine, excessive screen time and stimulation, skipped meals, caffeine excess, suppressed emotions, major life changes, constitutional Vata sensitivity.

How it shows up (Lakshana)

Racing or looping thoughts, restlessness, palpitations without cardiac cause, shallow breathing, disturbed sleep, digestive upset with worry, fatigue yet inability to relax.

Key herbs & formulations

Ashwagandha (evening, with warm milk), Brahmi, Jatamansi, Shankhapushpi, Tagara; Saraswatarishta as classical tonic (practitioner-guided).

Classical medicines beyond kitchen herbs should be taken under a registered Ayurvedic practitioner, especially with existing medication, in pregnancy, or for children.

Home care protocol (Chikitsa)

Ashwagandha 1-2 g with warm milk at night; Brahmi tea or capsule in the morning; daily 10-minute self-massage of feet and scalp with warm sesame oil; fixed wake/sleep/meal times; 10 minutes of slow breathing twice daily; reduce caffeine after noon.

Food rules (Pathya–Apathya)

Favour

Warm, cooked, mildly sweet and grounding foods: rice, ghee, milk, dates, soaked almonds, root vegetables, warm spiced milk at night.

Avoid

Excess coffee/energy drinks, cold raw food when anxious, skipping meals, alcohol as a relaxant, doom-scrolling at night.

Lifestyle (Vihara)

Digital sunset 1 hour before bed; morning sunlight walk; journaling to empty the mind; keep one unhurried meal daily; nature time weekly.

Yoga & breath

Anulom Vilom 10 min, Bhramari 5 rounds at bedtime, Yoga Nidra, gentle grounding asanas (Balasana, Paschimottanasana).
