Mind & Sleep

Weak Memory & Poor Focus · Smriti Daurbalya

vata involved Source: Charaka Samhita Chikitsa 1-3 (Medhya Rasayana)

Forgetfulness, scattered attention and mental fatigue are treated in Ayurveda with the Medhya Rasayanas — four classical intellect-rejuvenating herbs (Brahmi, Shankhpushpi, Yashtimadhu, Guduchi) — combined with sleep repair and single-tasking. The mind is a Vata function: routine, oil and warm nourishment steady it.

See a doctor first if: Sudden memory loss, confusion or disorientation, memory decline interfering with daily function (especially over 60), or memory loss after head injury — needs medical evaluation, not herbs.

Why it happens (Nidana)

Poor sleep, information overload and constant task-switching, excess dry-cold food and skipped meals, chronic worry, sedentary indoor life, screen use into the night; in students, exam stress plus junk food.

How it shows up (Lakshana)

Forgetting names and recent events, re-reading without absorbing, difficulty starting and finishing tasks, mental fatigue by afternoon, restless shallow sleep.

Key herbs & formulations

Brahmi and Shankhpushpi (the classical pair), Vacha in pinch doses for sharpness, Jatamansi if sleep is broken, Ashwagandha for the stressed-tired type; Brahmi Ghrita classically.

Classical medicines beyond kitchen herbs should be taken under a registered Ayurvedic practitioner, especially with existing medication, in pregnancy, or for children.

Home care protocol (Chikitsa)

Brahmi + Shankhpushpi powder (half tsp each) with warm milk morning and evening for at least 8 weeks; a teaspoon of ghee in warm milk at night feeds the nervous system; oil the scalp twice weekly; fix sleep before anything else — memory consolidates only in deep sleep; single-task in 45-minute blocks.

Food rules (Pathya–Apathya)

Favour

Ghee daily, soaked almonds and walnuts, milk, whole grains, seasonal fruit, warm cooked meals at fixed times; breakfast is non-negotiable for students.

Avoid

Skipping meals, energy drinks and excess coffee, late-night eating, cold and dry snacking as meals, alcohol.

Lifestyle (Vihara)

Sleep 7-8 hours ending by sunrise; morning sunlight 15 minutes; phone out of the bedroom; study/deep work in the Kapha-stable morning hours; weekly digital half-day off.

Yoga & breath

Nadi Shodhana 10 minutes before study, Bhramari 5 rounds for instant settling, Tratak (candle gazing) builds attention span; Sarvangasana under instruction.
