High Blood Pressure Support · Raktagata Vata

vata involvedpitta involved Source: Charaka on Vatavyadhi and Raktagata Vata concepts; classical Hridya herb tradition

Modern hypertension is understood classically as Vata-Pitta disturbance in circulation (Raktagata Vata) — pressure, heat and constriction in the vessels driven by stress, salt and stimulation. Ayurvedic care supports prescribed treatment: calming the nervous system (Jatamansi, meditation), heart-toning with Arjuna, and cutting the salt-stimulant load. Never stop BP medication on your own — untreated pressure silently damages heart, brain and kidneys.

See a doctor first if: BP above 180/120, chest pain, breathlessness, vision changes, weakness of one side, or severe headache = emergency. This guidance supports but never replaces antihypertensive medication; adjust doses only with your physician as readings improve.

Why it happens (Nidana)

Chronic stress and anger, excess salt and processed food, alcohol and smoking, sedentary living, obesity, sleep deprivation, family history, excess stimulants.

How it shows up (Lakshana)

Often silent; may show as headache at the back of head (especially morning), irritability, sleep disturbance, palpitations, flushed face; diagnosed by repeated measurement.

Key herbs & formulations

Arjuna — the heart tonic, Jatamansi and Brahmi for the stress axis, Ashwagandha (mild cases, monitored), Rasona (garlic), Punarnava where swelling coexists; Sarpagandha only under strict practitioner supervision.

Classical medicines beyond kitchen herbs should be taken under a registered Ayurvedic practitioner, especially with existing medication, in pregnancy, or for children.

Home care protocol (Chikitsa)

Arjuna Ksheerapaka (bark simmered in milk-water) at bedtime; Jatamansi quarter tsp with water at night for stress-heavy cases; 2 crushed garlic cloves in the morning; daily 30-45 minute walk; 15 minutes of slow breathing (6 breaths/minute) measurably lowers pressure; home BP log twice daily to show your doctor.

Food rules (Pathya–Apathya)

Favour

Fresh vegetables and fruit generously, moong and barley, garlic, amla daily, buttermilk, potassium-rich foods (coconut water, banana) unless kidney disease restricts them.

Avoid

Salt beyond 5 g/day — the biggest single lever, papad-pickle-namkeen, processed and canned food, alcohol, smoking (constricts vessels), excess coffee, late nights.

Lifestyle (Vihara)

Sleep 7-8 hours; morning walk in green surroundings; unplug from news/screens an hour before bed; practice releasing anger — Pitta management is pressure management; measure BP same time daily.

Yoga & breath

Shavasana daily 10 minutes, Bhramari and Anulom Vilom (slow), moon salutations; avoid inversions and breath retention with uncontrolled pressure.
