Asthma & Wheezing Support · Tamaka Shwasa

vata involvedkapha involved Source: Charaka Samhita Chikitsa 17 (Hikka-Shwasa); Madhava Nidana 12

Tamaka Shwasa is the classical description of asthma: Kapha obstructing the airways while reversed Vata drives wheezing that worsens lying down and at night. Ayurvedic care is strictly supportive alongside prescribed inhalers — thinning mucus, warming digestion and strengthening the lungs between episodes. Never stop prescribed asthma medication.

See a doctor first if: This guidance never replaces inhalers or emergency care. Blue lips, inability to speak full sentences, no relief from the reliever inhaler, or drowsiness during an attack = emergency — call for help immediately.

Why it happens (Nidana)

Dust, smoke and cold exposure; cold and heavy food; suppressed cough or cold pushed deeper; weak digestion generating mucus; family predisposition; stress as a trigger.

How it shows up (Lakshana)

Episodic wheezing and chest tightness, breathlessness worse lying flat and in early morning hours, dry or sticky cough, relief on sitting up and after warm drinks.

Key herbs & formulations

Pippali (the premier lung Rasayana), Vasa, Yashtimadhu, Tulsi, Shunthi, Pushkarmool-based classical formulations; Sitopaladi Churna with honey (practitioner guided).

Classical medicines beyond kitchen herbs should be taken under a registered Ayurvedic practitioner, especially with existing medication, in pregnancy, or for children.

Home care protocol (Chikitsa)

BETWEEN episodes: half teaspoon Sitopaladi with honey twice daily; warm water sips through the day; ginger-tulsi-black pepper tea; steam with ajwain at night; during a mild wheeze, hot water sips and sitting leaning forward help — but always use the prescribed inhaler first and without delay.

Food rules (Pathya–Apathya)

Favour

Warm, light, freshly cooked food; old rice, moong, barley; garlic and ginger in cooking; lukewarm water; honey in the morning; early light dinner.

Avoid

Curd, ice cream, cold water and refrigerated food, banana and heavy sweets at night, fried food, overeating at dinner, exposure to smoke and incense.

Lifestyle (Vihara)

Dinner 3 hours before bed and on the lighter side; dust-proof the bedroom; gentle daily walk; keep the reliever inhaler accessible always; breathing practice daily BETWEEN episodes builds capacity.

Yoga & breath

Anulom Vilom daily, gentle Bhramari; Bhastrika only when fully well and trained; avoid breath retention during any symptoms.
