Low Haemoglobin & Anaemia · Pandu

pitta involved Source: Charaka Samhita Chikitsa 16 (Pandu Chikitsa); Madhava Nidana 8

Pandu Roga — the pale disease — is the classical description of anaemia: depleted blood (Rakta) showing as pallor, fatigue and breathlessness on exertion. Ayurveda rebuilds blood with iron-rich food prepared for absorbability, Amalaki and classical iron preparations (Lauha Bhasma types — practitioner only), while insisting the cause (bleeding, worms, poor diet) is found and fixed.

See a doctor first if: Haemoglobin below 8, breathlessness at rest, chest pain, blood in stool or black stools, very heavy periods, or anaemia in pregnancy — needs prompt medical management; severe anaemia is never a home-remedy project.

Why it happens (Nidana)

Iron-poor diet, heavy menstrual bleeding, piles or other blood loss, worm infestation, poor absorption from weak Agni, repeated pregnancies without recovery, excess sour-salty food damaging blood.

How it shows up (Lakshana)

Paleness of skin, nails and inner eyelids, easy fatigue, breathlessness climbing stairs, hair fall, brittle nails, craving to eat mud/ice (Mrittika Bhakshana — classical sign), palpitations, dizziness.

Key herbs & formulations

Amalaki (vitamin C engine of iron absorption), Punarnava Mandura and Lauha Bhasma classically (STRICTLY practitioner-prescribed), Moringa leaf, Guduchi, Draksha (raisins); dates and black sesame as food-medicine.

Classical medicines beyond kitchen herbs should be taken under a registered Ayurvedic practitioner, especially with existing medication, in pregnancy, or for children.

Home care protocol (Chikitsa)

Food-first protocol: cook in an iron kadhai; pair every iron food with amla or lemon (vitamin C multiplies absorption); soaked black raisins with breakfast; drumstick-leaf (moringa) sabzi thrice weekly; avoid tea/coffee within an hour of iron-rich meals (tannins block absorption); test haemoglobin, find the CAUSE with a doctor, and retest in 8-12 weeks.

Food rules (Pathya–Apathya)

Favour

Moringa leaves, garden greens cooked with lemon, dates, black raisins and jaggery (in moderation), sesame, pomegranate, beetroot, amla daily, sprouted (well-cooked) legumes, animal sources if consumed.

Avoid

Tea and coffee with or right after meals, excess calcium supplements alongside iron meals, junk food displacing real meals, excess sour-fermented food.

Lifestyle (Vihara)

Treat heavy periods, piles or worms — refilling a leaking tank fails; moderate exertion only until haemoglobin recovers; sunlight and rest support blood formation.

Yoga & breath

Gentle practice only while anaemic: Pawanmuktasana, supported Viparita Karani, slow Anulom Vilom; build intensity as haemoglobin normalises.
