White Discharge · Shweta Pradara

kapha involved Source: Charaka Samhita Chikitsa 30; Bhavaprakasha Chikitsa 70

Shweta Pradara is excessive white vaginal discharge — in Ayurveda a Kapha condition of depleted tissue strength, often riding on poor diet, weak digestion and fatigue. Normal discharge needs no treatment; the bothersome excess type responds to astringent-nourishing herbs like Lodhra and Shatavari with tissue-strengthening food. Any coloured, itchy or foul discharge needs a doctor first, as infection is common and treatable.

See a doctor first if: Yellow/green/curdy or foul-smelling discharge, itching, pain, fever, bleeding between periods or after intimacy — these suggest infection or other conditions needing examination and specific treatment. See a gynaecologist first; use this guidance for the non-infective depletion type only.

Why it happens (Nidana)

Excess heavy-sweet-fermented food, weak digestion, repeated pregnancies or exertion without recovery, anaemia and poor nourishment, chronic stress; infections must be ruled out medically.

How it shows up (Lakshana)

Whitish discharge staining innerwear, heaviness and fatigue, low backache, weakness; the Ayurvedic (non-infective) type has no itching, odour or colour — those signs point to infection instead.

Key herbs & formulations

Lodhra — the classical specific, Shatavari, Amalaki, Ashoka, rice-washing water (Tandulodaka) as the traditional vehicle; Pushyanuga Churna and Ashokarishta classically (practitioner guided).

Classical medicines beyond kitchen herbs should be taken under a registered Ayurvedic practitioner, especially with existing medication, in pregnancy, or for children.

Home care protocol (Chikitsa)

Lodhra powder (half tsp) with rice-water twice daily for 3-4 weeks is the classical protocol; Shatavari with milk at night rebuilds strength; treat the fatigue and anaemia alongside — iron-rich food, amla daily; strict genital hygiene with plain water, no harsh washes.

Food rules (Pathya–Apathya)

Favour

Nourishing whole food: rice with moong, milk, ghee, amla, pomegranate, dates and soaked raisins, sesame in winter; iron-rich greens cooked well.

Avoid

Excess sweets and bakery food, curd daily, fermented and stale food, cold drinks, fried snacks; skipping meals worsens the depletion.

Lifestyle (Vihara)

Rest genuinely — this is a depletion condition; moderate exertion; cotton innerwear changed daily; do not self-treat coloured or itchy discharge — get examined first.

Yoga & breath

Baddha Konasana, Malasana, Viparita Karani (legs up wall) for pelvic circulation; Yoga Nidra for the fatigue component.
