Allergic Rhinitis & Sneezing · Vataja Pratishyaya

Seasonal sneezing, itchy nose and watery eyes map to Vataja Pratishyaya — a hypersensitive respiratory lining driven by Vata-Kapha imbalance and low tissue immunity. Ayurveda works on both fronts: protecting the nasal lining (oil, steam) and rebuilding respiratory resilience with Rasayana herbs across seasons.

See a doctor first if: Wheezing or breathlessness with the allergy, fever, coloured thick discharge beyond a week, or one-sided nasal blockage that never opens — see a doctor to rule out infection or structural cause.

Why it happens (Nidana)

Dust, pollen and weather change on a vulnerable constitution; suppressed natural urges; cold food and drinks; day sleep; weak digestion producing Ama that sensitises the system.

How it shows up (Lakshana)

Sneezing fits (especially morning), running or blocked nose, itchy nose/palate/eyes, watery eyes, heaviness of head; often seasonal or triggered by dust.

Key herbs & formulations

Tulsi, Haridra (turmeric), Pippali, Vacha (for blocked sinuses), Shunthi, classical Chyawanprash as daily Rasayana; Anu Taila for Nasya.

Classical medicines beyond kitchen herbs should be taken under a registered Ayurvedic practitioner, especially with existing medication, in pregnancy, or for children.

Home care protocol (Chikitsa)

Two drops of warm sesame oil or Anu Taila in each nostril every morning (Nasya) coats and protects the lining; steam inhalation with ajwain at night during flares; turmeric-milk daily; honey with equal parts turmeric and pippali powder in season; identify and reduce trigger exposure.

Food rules (Pathya–Apathya)

Favour

Warm, light, freshly cooked food; ginger-tulsi tea; honey (never heated); turmeric and black pepper in cooking; warm water only.

Avoid

Curd, ice cream, cold drinks and refrigerated food, banana at night, excessive sweets, heavy breakfast, day sleep — all raise Kapha and mucus.

Lifestyle (Vihara)

Morning oil drops in the nose before stepping out; cover nose in dusty wind; wash bedding weekly in hot water; start Rasayana support one month before your bad season.

Yoga & breath

Bhastrika and Kapalabhati (gentle, out of flare), Nadi Shodhana daily, Surya Namaskara to raise metabolic warmth.
